Why Shielded Cable Matters

We've worked on EVs for over a decade, ranging from ebikes and gokarts to tractors, boats, and hypercars.  As voltage and performance increases, so do the safety and reliability requirements.  We've chosen to carry the most appropriate cable for the job: shielded.  Shielded cable has several benefits, including EMI reduction and increased safety with isolation monitoring.

Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) Reduction

The cables connecting an inverter's output to a motor's phase connections carry an alternating current (AC) waveform to drive the motor.  This waveform is created using a switching frequency in the 10-20 kHz range, and can be disruptive to nearby electronic devices, including CANbus systems.  Properly shielded cable significantly reduces the amount of radiated noise and keeps sensitive systems up and running.

Safety: Isolation Monitoring

In high voltage systems, no part of the HV battery pack should be connected to the low voltage wiring or chassis intentionally.  Of course, accidents happen, which is why many battery management systems (BMS) include some sort of isolation monitoring device.  This device is constantly measuring the amount of isolation between the high voltage battery pack and the chassis. If the device detects a strong enough connection, it can raise a alert and even open contactors to increase isolation.  A properly shielded cable not only adds another physical layer of defense but gives more opportunity for a chafed or nicked cable to register an isolation fault.
